Day 1, Arrive / Nairobi, Kenya
Jambo na Karibu! After a heartfelt welcome to Kenya, you’ll be transported to your lovely, centrally-located hotel. Relax, unwind at the pool and spa, or explore for the remainder of your day.
Day 2, Mount Kenya
Meet your fellow safari travelers and begin your journey to the dense rain forests of the Aberdares Mountains and your tree lodge, located at 7,200 feet on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya. Walk down to your lodge’s underground viewing platform to observe and photograph the elephants, waterbuck and a constant ballet of wildlife coming down to drink at the waterhole. Unwind after a delicious dinner and observe in wonder as the nocturnal animals come out to drink at the floodlit waterhole. (BLD)
Day 3, Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Begin your journey to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and its acacia-dotted savannah. Settle into lunch at your first well-appointed safari camp in the private Sweetwaters Game Reserve, and enjoy sweeping views across the plains to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. Meet your expert ranger for an afternoon game drive into the reserve and be ready to photography a kaleidoscope of wildlife: zebra, eland, oryx, waterbuck, elephant, buffalo, lion, silver-backed jackals, ostrich, hartebeest, baboon and rhino, along with hundreds of species of birds. You’ll also have the chance to visit Sweetwaters Chimp Sanctuary, Kenya’s only such sanctuary, to meet and learn about the endearing chimps transferred from the Jane Goodall Institute. Capture the silhouettes of languid giraffes and familial elephants softly padding by as you return to your camp for a hearty dinner. (BLD)
Day 4, Lake Elmenteita
Awaken with birdsong as you leave Ol Pejeta Conservancy for Nyahururu, still referred to as “Thomson's Falls” for its stunning 237 foot-tall cascade. Travel on to the Soysambu Conservancy and your new luxury camp on the shores of Lake Elmentaita. Arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. (BLD)
Day 5, Lake Elmenteita
After breakfast, you’ll meet your expert ranger and set out for a game drive along the shores of Lake Nakuru, renowned for its phenomenal birding. The shallow alkaline lake serves as the seasonal feeding ground for over a million lesser and greater flamingo, and is home to thousands of water birds including the white pelican, greater cormorant and sacred ibis. Your ranger will also seek out the bigger animals around the lake’s grasslands and rocky outcroppings, including waterbuck, baboons, and even the endangered white rhino. (BLD)
Day 6, Masai Mara Game Reserve
Savor a leisurely lakeside breakfast before heading out for Maasailand and Masai Mara National Park. After stopping for lunch, your expert driver and guide will take you for an afternoon game drive into the park, arriving at your lodge just as the sun sets. Gather for dinner and unwind as you watch the infinite African sky reveal its sparkling jewels. (BLD)
Day 7, Masai Mara Game Reserve
Your expert ranger awaits you for this morning’s early game drive along the Mara River and throughout the reserve. Depending on the timing of your stay in the Mara, you may be lucky enough to witness the Great Migration, the annual migration of over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle in search of rain-ripened grass. Whether or not you catch up with this grand spectacle, the Mara's tree-flecked grasslands are frequented by huge herds of plains game; prides of black-maned lion, leopard and cheetah; herds of elephants and prolific birdlife year-round. Upon returning to camp, you may opt (at an additional cost) to immerse yourself in the local culture with a visit to the authentic Maasai Village; then, fill in your eclectic photo gallery during this afternoon’s game drive. Tonight, take in your last magical African sunset and join your fellow travelers in a toast to your unforgettable adventure. (BLD)
Day 8, Nairobi / Depart
Enjoy breakfast, before retracing your journey across the vast plains of the Rift Valley. Arrive in Nairobi’s bustling city center in the afternoon in time to transfer to the international airport for your ongoing travel arrangements. (B)
